Articles on the world history of democracy
Starting in 1989, I studied the history of democracy as a world phenomenon. Working with my friend and collaborator Philippe Paine, I argued that democratic thought and action were not restricted to the "Western" tradition. In a number of articles I examined the very interesting case of the republics of ancient India, which I believe are quite comparable to the well-known city-states of ancient Greece.
